TN Board of Law Examiners Deputy Director

The Tennessee Board of Law Examiners seeks a Deputy Director, a highly responsible administrative position that offers an opportunity to engage in interesting work with a dedicated staff. The successful candidate will learn all functions of the operations of the Board and will share responsibility for completion of those functions with, and report to, the Executive Director.

 

SUMMARY: The Board of Law Examiners, an appointed body of the Supreme Court of the State of Tennessee, is responsible for all aspects of the bar admission process in Tennessee, including administration of the bar examination and background investigation of candidates to the bar. The Deputy Director will assist the Executive Director in administering the Board’s office, supervising staff, implementing Board policies, and advising the Board and Court on changes to policies, rules, and procedures.

 

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES:

· Will participate in the hiring, training, supporting, and evaluating of staff members, as well as overseeing those with recurring relationships with the Board, such as bar exam proctors and graders.

· Will assist the Executive Director with review of background investigations, show cause hearings, and related application processes.

· Will share oversight of all aspects of delivery of the bar examination and release of grades with the Executive Director.

· Working with the graders, will facilitate the process of updating the Tennessee Law Course.

· Will assist in managing the fiscal operations of the Board. This includes participating in the daily fiscal reporting, monitoring agency expenditures, negotiating lease space for the examinations and, with the assistance of the fiscal department, preparing annual budgets and long-term financial projections for approval by the Board and Court.

· Will assist the Executive Director as liaison to other partners in the legal community, including the law schools, the bar associations, and the Court’s other boards and commissions.

· Will participate in the network of bar admission professionals within the U.S. as well as in the professional organizations - the National Conference of Bar Examiners and the Council of Bar Admission Administrators. Interaction directly with applicants occurs periodically to answer more complex questions and to address concerns.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

To succeed in this position, a candidate must be committed to public service, enjoy a multifaceted job, be comfortable with public speaking, and be adept at navigating a sometimes high-pressured and fast-paced environment.

 

Education and/or Experience: Applicants must be licensed in Tennessee and have significant experience in the practice of law.
