Justice Dwight E. Tarwater of the Tennessee Supreme Court is accepting applications to serve as his Administrative Judicial Law Clerk beginning in September 2025.
Duties and Responsibilities: Primary duties include researching substantive legal issues, preparing legal memoranda, bench briefs, orders, and drafting opinions; reviewing opinions and orders circulated by other Justices and Supreme Court Staff Attorneys; conducting legal research; advising Justice Tarwater on pending cases; preparing for oral argument; analyzing applications for permission to appeal; and other related work as necessary. This role will also include certain administrative duties.
Qualifications and Experience: Applicants should possess a strong academic record, excellent research and writing skills, and high standards of integrity and professionalism. The successful applicant must also be able to effectively communicate both orally and in writing; research complex legal problems or questions and apply legal principles; represent the court in a respectful manner; analyze, appraise and organize facts, evidence, legal documentation, and precedents in assigned cases; and define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Graduation from law school with a juris doctorate degree is required.
The Administrative Judicial Law Clerk will work with the Senior Judicial Law Clerk and Judicial Law Clerk in Justice Tarwater’s chambers in Knoxville. This is an in-office position with periodic remote work at Justice Tarwater’s discretion.
