Monday, May 31 is Memorial Day, and many courthouses across the state will be hosting special ceremonies in observance of the holiday. Here is a partial list of services at county courthouses honoring those who gave their lives in service to our nation.
Saturday, May 29
6 p.m. – Coffee County Courthouse in Manchester
This event is hosted by the Coffee County Veterans Association.
Sunday, May 30
8 a.m. – Crockett County Courthouse in Alamo
A special Memorial Day service will take place in front of the Veterans’ Memorial at the Crockett County Courthouse.
Monday, May 31
8 a.m. – Henry County Courthouse in Paris
This service will feature guest speaker Major Susie Parker of the Tennessee National Guard. A staged military funeral service will also be conducted by members of the Tennessee State Guard.
9:30 a.m. – Cocke County Courthouse in Newport
AMVETS Post 75 is hosting this Memorial Day program, which will feature guest speaker Leslie Purser, Major General, U.S. Army, Retired.
9:45 a.m. – DeKalb County Courthouse in Smithville
Patriotic music begins at 9:45, followed by a service featuring, prayers, poetry, music, a wreath laying by active service members and veterans, and the playing of taps.
10 a.m. – Anderson County Courthouse in Clinton
Jason Deel, Major, U.S. Army, Retired will be the featured speaker at this event. Attendees will also hear remarks by State Representative John Ragan and Anderson County Mayor Terry Frank. The event will close with a wreath laying.
11 a.m. – Bradley County Courthouse in Cleveland
Poppies will be distributed before, during, and after this event at the Bradley County Courthouse.
11 a.m. – Campbell County Courthouse in Jacksboro
Campbell County Mayor E.L. Morton, U.S. Army Retired, will speak at this ceremony at the Veterans Memorial on the lawn of the Campbell County Courthouse.
11 a.m. – Carter County Veterans War Memorial in Elizabethton
This event will feature singing and the reading of all the names on the monuments in the park, each one that of a fallen service member from Carter County. The Veterans War Memorial is located just down the block from the Carter County Courthouse.
11 a.m. – Chester County Courthouse in Henderson
A Memorial Day service starts at 11 a.m. in the Council chambers of Henderson City Hall. It will be followed by a wreath laying in front of the Chester County Courthouse.
11 a.m. – Dyer County Courthouse Square in Dyersburg
This service will take place in the park on the north side of the courthouse square and will feature remarks by State Representative Rusty Grills.
11 a.m. – Hawkins County Courthouse in Rogersville
Ret. Col. Mike Manning will be the keynote speaker at this event, which will also feature a wreath laying, a reading of the names of Hawkins County veterans who died in service, the playing of taps, and more.
11 a.m. – Henderson County Courthouse in Lexington
This event is organized by the American Legion Post #77 and will feature special guest speaker Ben Park.
11 a.m. – Monroe County Courthouse in Madisonville
This event, which will also be streamed on Facebook Live, features remarks from several speakers, including Lynn Forehand, a local Gold Star mother, and Monroe County Mayor Mitch Ingram. The service will also include a 21-gun salute and the playing of taps.
11 a.m. – Rhea County Courthouse in Dayton
Rhea County Veterans Services is hosting this ceremony.
11 a.m. – Weakley County Courthouse in Dresden
This event is sponsored by Weakley County Veterans Affairs.
2 p.m. – Hamblen County Courthouse in Morristown
A Memorial Day service will be held at the Veterans Memorial in front of the Hamblen County Courthouse.
