Child support magistrates from throughout the state recently gathered in Knoxville for an annual training session organized by the Tennessee Supreme Court, the Administrative Office of the Courts, and the Tennessee Department of Human Services. This training session dealt specifically with updates and issues surrounding cases being enforced under Title IV-D of the Social Security Act.
At the training session, which was held at the Tennessee Supreme Court building in Knoxville, the magistrates heard from DHS officials about the latest developments in child support policies and had the opportunity to dialogue with those officials and each other about issues they encounter in the course of their work.
Tennessee Supreme Court Justice Sharon Lee started the day off with an introduction, while various DHS officials, including DHS Director of Child Support Field Operations and Policy Patti Wood, followed up with discussions of everything from child support law to technological innovations in the field.
In all, 18 child support magistrates who hear Title IV-D child support cases attended the event. Eight of those attendees are magistrates who are appointed pursuant to Tenn. Code Ann. § 36-5-402 , while the others are appointed at the county level. Of those county magistrates in attendance, four came from Hamilton County, three came from Shelby County, two came from Knox County, and one came from Rutherford County.
These child support magistrate training sessions have been offered annually since 2015.
