Chancellor George R. Ellis passed away on November 15, a day after his 73rd birthday.
Chancellor Ellis served the 28th Judicial District, which includes Crockett, Gibson and Haywood counties, since 1993, and was re-elected four times.
Prior to taking the bench as a chancellor, he served as a General Sessions Judge in Gibson County and as a Municipal Judge in Dyer County. He was the youngest individual in Tennessee history to serve on a constitutionally mandated court when sworn in as General Sessions Judge of Gibson County.
Chancellor Ellis was a Veteran of the United States Navy. He worked as an attorney for Harrell & Harrell and was the campaign coordinator for the re-election of the late U.S. Representative Ed Jones. He also served as an LBJ Congressional Intern.
Chancellor Ellis previously served as chairman of the Tennessee Judicial Conference Security Committee.
He was a graduate of the University of Tennessee at Knoxville and the Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law at the University of Memphis. Chancellor Ellis served on the Board of Governors of the University of Tennessee National Alumni Association and the Board of Directors of the University of Memphis Law Alumni Association.
A Memorial Service will be held Sunday, November 21st at 2 p.m. at the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Dyer, Tennessee. There will be designated seating for the Judiciary as well as the Bar.
